From the silvery beaches of the coast to the jagged peaks of the Southern Alps, the Canterbury landscape is impossible to ignore. Big scenery is the order of the day - huge panoramas of ocean or mountains, great sweeps of pastureland and massive amounts of sky. The highest point of the region is the highest point of New Zealand. The spectacular Aoraki Mount Cook stands at 3754 metres. Ashburton is the gateway to some of the South Island's best attractions and activities including fly fishing in the Rakaia River, to hot air ballooning over the Canterbury Plains and skiing at Mount Hutt. Timaru and Oamaru have an impressive heritage and the amazing boulders just out of Oamaru are a highlight.

Rotorua sits squarely on the Pacific Ring of Fire, so volcanic activity is part of the city’s past and present. Entertaining in any weather, and at any time of the year, Rotorua promises to keep you captivated with geothermal phenomena and special cultural experiences. Geysers, boiling mud pools, marae stays, hangi feasts, an authentic pre-European Maori village and indulgent spa therapies will provide plenty of entertainment.

Otago has stunning mountain landscapes, large rural areas with sheep, paddocks, rivers, lakes, and white sandy beaches. On the doorstep of Dunedin city, you can find incredible wildlife - the world's rarest penguins, a mainland albatross colony, fur seals and sea lions. Stewart Island is one of New Zealand's largely undiscovered eco-tourism destinations. Of New Zealand's three main islands, Stewart Island is the southernmost and smallest (about 75km long and up to 45km wide). The island contains New Zealand's newest national park - Rakiura National Park. About 85% of the island is a national park and there's only one settlement. Only on Stewart Island can you see tracts of virgin Southland native forest. Protecting these habitats, particularly on predator-free Ulva Island Open Bird Sanctuary (accessible by water taxi), is essential for the long-term survival of kiwi, yellow-eyed penguins, kakapo, dotterels, bats, weka, South Island saddlebacks and wetas (a large cricket-type flightless insect).
