Waiheke is the most populated of the Hauraki Gulf islands. The landscape is a picturesque blend of farmland, forest, beaches, vineyards and olive groves.

It’s easy to get around the island by bus or taxi. Alternatively, you can rent a car or scooter. You’ll find a good choice of accommodation, from five star retreats to backpacker hostels. It’s also possible to rent a beach house.

Favourite island activities include swimming, golf, horse riding and sea kayaking. You can also visit the Waiheke Island Historic Village, which has a collection of artifacts, photographs and archives from the 1900’s. The Historic Village is open throughout the year on Monday, Wednesday, Saturday & Sunday from 12 - 4pm.

At the eastern end of the island is Stony Batter; a large underground tunnel network left over from WWII. It’s open for viewing.  Stony Batter is a 10 to 25 minute walk to the tunnels from the carpark off Man O' War Bay Road. Allow 30 to 90 minutes to explore the fort and bring a torch for the underground tunnels.  Guided tours and information are available on site.
